Fundamentals
Addicts characteristically have problems with authority, impulse control and low self-esteem associated with impeded social performance. As the lack of self control would typically result in personal as well as social disorder, the acceptance of authoritative leadership with an emphasis on peer leadership is vital to the success of a Welcome Home student. To maintain an environment conducive to orderly living, clear and unambiguous rules of conduct are in place and are strictly enforced.
- Welcome Home students are taught to show respect in all relationships and towards all things, to accept authority, to be grateful, humble, polite, punctual, motivated, positive and responsible.
- Students are also taught accountability. Profanity or suggestive language is not tolerated. Lying, stealing, a stubborn attitude, or the use of tobacco are serious offences. No rough-housing or wrestling. When they break a rule, they receive discipline such as additional learning assignments and/or chores, loss of privileges, or being held back. Violent or destructive behavior, insubordination, and the use or possession of alcohol or drugs all break the “Cardinal Rules” and will result in dismissal.
- All reading material must be approved. Welcome Home maintains its own library.
- Pornography, violent material, hate literature, single player games, console games, cell phones, and portable internet are not allowed.
- Students are required to participate in all community events (chores, career training, recreation, etc.) that they are asked to join and complete any assignment they are instructed to perform.
- All e-mail and social networking accounts must be closed down until the student has reached the “Re-entry” stage of the Program. (After a minimum of 18 months)
- Students are not allowed to have any money, except for “pocket money” which is supplied during the latter part of the Program.
- The general motto of Welcome Home is to always strive for perfection, that includes cleanliness. Students are expected to ensure that their living quarters and, in fact, all WH facilities are not just clean and well-maintained, but kept in as near a state of perfection as possible.
- Only personal items are allowed into the Home and need prior approval. Ownership of items bought for a student during his stay in the Program will remain with Welcome Home if he leaves before graduation. Any gifts received by a student (money, donations, merchandise, etc.) belong to Welcome Home but will first be used to his benefit, if found appropriate.
- Students are required to submit to random drug testing and their belongings are subject to inspections at any time.
- Any relationship outside Welcome Home must be approved. This includes any relationship by phone, letter, or e-mail.
