Depending on who you ask and what their stake in the answer is, definitions are presented passionately, and often defended with single-minded dedication. Some say addiction is a disease or a mental health issue, while others fight tooth and nail against those ideas. Some will argue for or against the validity of “behavioral” addictions — addictions that don’t require a mind-altering substance — while still others go so far as to say that all addictions are behavioral in nature. Different definitions tend to emphasize issues like physiological and psychological dependence, morality, behavioral issues, habits, and compulsions; but they are ultimately defined by how the different persons or groups interpret them.
Throughout history, interpretations on what addiction really is or is not have led to serious challenges for addicts and their loved ones, as well as for doctors, insurance companies, judges and, of course, for religious and political bodies — not to mention the perceptions of the general public.
