The Welcome Home Program goes far beyond addiction recovery.
It is all about becoming the best person that one can be.
With this in mind, the Welcome Home Program not only addresses addiction
recovery, but further teaches personal development and career preparation.
Therefore, both classroom teaching and “on the job” training are major parts of
the Welcome Home Program. They are powerful tools in the recovery process
and important for on-going sobriety. From experience with, and feedback from,
Welcome Home students, we have learned that vocational training is one of the
most recognized and appreciated advantages of the Program.
Continued sobriety requires continued employment. Therefore, it is extremely
important that Welcome Home students become valuable employees.
The vocational training is conducted in real business and job settings. Program
participants learn all of the aspects of the competitive work world and develop
appropriate work ethics. This enables them to obtain a job, keep a job, and excel
in whatever career they choose. Among other things, they learn to be self-sufficient,
to maintain a living standard and support a family, to be a model friend, neighbor,
or citizen, to enjoy self-worth and self-respect, and to have pride in their career
and advancements.
While students are exposed to the challenges of the business world, they take pride
in being productive and learn needed work ethics to compete successfully in today’s
job market. Moreover, students keep their minds and bodies occupied productively
while they have the opportunity to develop their talents into marketable job skills.
They develop interpersonal, management, and leadership skills, humility and better
self-control. They learn to be “givers” instead of “takers” and to become valuable
employees or successful entrepreneurs. They learn problem-solving, to “stick to it”,
follow directions, cooperate with others, deal with the public, go the extra mile, be
punctual, polite, productive and disciplined, responsible, and accountable. In short,
vocational training is therapeutic, practical and vital in preparing students to handle
future career challenges successfully.
